help.GIF (136 bytes)Does my company need a website?

Quite simply yes. Internet use is still continuing to grow and more and more people are relying on the internet for information. Many people use the internet instead of the yellow pages either by searching in a search engine or using a directory (e.g. Yell.com or UKI). If your company does not have a web presence it is missing out. You can submit your company to online directories without having your own website but visitors will then not know where your specialties lie. A website allows visitors to read about your products or services, view photos, read feedback and testimonials. As a small business, the best option is to contact a web development company and arrange the design, hosting and promotion of your site for a fixed fee. Design costs can spiral when an over ambitious design company tests out their ideas on your time so a fixed cost is a safe option. Some companies offer 'mini-sites' where your webpages are part of their site. with this option your don't get your own domain name (e.g.www.yourcompany.co.uk) but the costs are lower and you can benefit from the association to the bigger company.

help.GIF (136 bytes)What is ecommerce and how can it help me?

Ecommerce is any kind of business carried out over the internet. If your company sell products then it is essential that you have an online shop on your website. This will involve images and descriptions of your products plus pricing information. To be really successful, you want to be able to sell these products online. Some companies have elaborate sales forms but then requests that cheques are posted to the head office. This isn't making the most of the available technology. Many web development companies can set up online purchasing for you. For this you will need a merchant account to accept transactions made by Visa, Delta Switch etc. Paypal is probably the most famous of merchant accounts as it was created by Ebay to improve transactions through their auction site. Other merchant accounts such as Worldpay also exist. Your web development company should be able to advise you as to which account is best suited to your needs.
If your company is in the service industry ecommerce is still a huge advantage. For example, with ecommerce you could allow visitors to book and pay for their hotel rooms, book tickets, book restaurant tables and book appointments. Even charities are using ecommerce with online donations, online fundraising and volunteer applications online.

help.GIF (136 bytes)What is VOIP?

VOIP or Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol) does basically what it's name suggests. Using VOIP software such as Skype or MSN messenger, you can talk through your internet connection rather than using your telephone. The best thing about VOIP is that these internet calls are free if both parties are connected to the internet. You can call normal landlines and mobiles using VOIP such as Skype but these calls do cost money, but for international calls it can be a lot cheaper. A word of warning though, a recent court case in America highlighted the problem that some VOIP services do not allow calls to emergency services. So don't throw away your old phone just yet. At the moment the best use of VOIP is in the office environment where all PCs and workstations are connected to the internet already. In this situation all calls within the office, to other branches or to other companies with a similar VOIP set up will be free.
