help.GIF (136 bytes)Is advertising online different to normal advertising?

Online advertising is very different from advertising in magazines and bill boards. You can still buy advertising space on the internet but the pricing is not usually based on a per month or per year fee. To advertise on a specific website you should contact that website's advertising department as costs vary from site to site and on different pages of the same site. The cost of advertising is usually based on the amount of traffic. The standard rates are calculated using a 'cost per thousand impressions' (CPM) amount based on one thousand views of the page where your advert is located. However, some companies are now using a pay per click method of advertising. For example, Google offer 'Adwords' where you decide how much want to pay Google for every person that clicks on your advert to go to your site. If you just want to raise awareness of your company or product then stick to CPM adverts.

help.GIF (136 bytes)How can I get free advertising?

There are ways of getting free advertising on the internet. The most common of these are 'link exchanges' where by one website emails another saying it will create a link to their site if the other site links back in return. This is most effective if the site linking to your company is either similar or related to yours e.g. ferry company linking to a train company. But some websites try to abuse these relationships by having several pages of links with no relevance to their company. Most visitors to the site will not spend time reading through the links and therefore the linking company will not receive any benefit. But this reciprocal linking can be advantageous in search engine optimisation (SEO).

help.GIF (136 bytes)What is SEO?

SEO or search engine optimisation is a method to get your website to the top of the search engine list. Being at the top of the search engines is one of the most effective forms of advertising online. To get to the top or near the top, your site needs to have a rich content which is updated regularly. This is monitored by the search engine 'spiders' or 'bots' that crawl through internet pages looking for keywords and seeing what's new. Search engines also look at how many websites link to your site. The more pages that link to yours the better, but better still, the more pages that link to pages that link to yours, the better!  All of this is very time consuming and there are more aspects to search engine optimisation than are listed here. There are many SEO companies that can do this for you. They also have more experience in doing it and therefore know all the secrets.
